Pet Food Recall as of May 5, 2012

Pet Food Recall (Info as of May 5, 2012)

(This info was passed along to us from a retailer that sells Dog Food on the east coast. As of today, it is preliminary in nature and the list may grow.)

Below is general information passed along about the recall from the manufacture of pet foods that may have been contaminated with Salmonella.  Remember not only is Salmonella dangerous for your pets but it can also be contracted by humans handling the contaminated pet food.  So you really should take this seriously and check  any of the dog foods that you are feeding your pets from the following pet food companies.

(Note from Blog Author: Personally, I find it disgusting that this type of contamination has happened yet again.  Consumers trust that pet food manufactures are testing these foods before they go to market.  Obviously they are not!  One of the best things that you can do is to stop purchasing from them and find a food such as Life’s Abundance Dog and CatFood that has never, ever been on a recall list.)

If you purchased any of the following brands, we encourage you to check your product now, not only for your pet’s protection but for your own.)

If by chance you do have a formula that is part of the recall, see the contact information at the bottom of this post for assistance in getting more information and instructions on how to obtain a refund.

Remember too that this is just a preliminary list.  The list is likely to grow with more brands involved.

Diamond Pet Foods Expands Voluntary Recall to Include Diamond Puppy Formula
due to Possible Salmonella Contamination

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 30, 2012 - Diamond Pet Foods is expanding a voluntary recall to include Diamond Puppy Formula dry dog food. The company took this precautionary measure because sampling revealed Salmonella in the product. No dog illnesses have been reported.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

People infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Petco Food Seizure

Do you ever think about the shipment and warehousing of your pet's food? Probably not, who does?

Like most people, you are probably only concerned with an attractive-looking bag at a bargain basement price. But buyer beware! What you don't know can hurt you and your pets. If you love your pets, then you need to be aware of what might be going on before a bag of dog or cat food hits the store shelves.

Consider this: Petco found it's Joliet warehouse being raided by the Feds as a result of "unsanitary conditions" as described in a warrant issued by the United States District Court in Chicago. U.S. Marshals seized all FDA-regulated animal food susceptible to rodent and pest contamination. The seized products violate the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act because it was alleged in a case filed by the United States Attorney that they were being held under unsanitary conditions.

The Joliet, IL Distribution Center provides pet food products and supplies to PETCO retail stores in 16 states including Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

View the official release from the FDA:
http://www.fda.gov/forconsumers/consumerupdates/ucm048124.htm

Caring pet parents should also become aware of the other potential problems associated with the archaic mass distribution processes of pet foods.

• Powerful chemical preservatives used to create a two year shelf life • Non climate controlled storage containers (semi trucks) used for extended periods of time • Mass production of product to ensure availability

Always, always remember, there is more to choosing a quality pet food than what you may read on a "pretty" package. Pretty packages are designed to sell, and to draw you in, making you think that you are getting a healthy dog food.

We recommend Lifes Abundance Dog Food which is a healthy, wholesome dog food that has never, ever been on a recall list.

Petco just happened to get caught, think about how this could be happening with other large distributors that we don't know about.
